Ram Navami 2027: The Birth of Lord Rama

Festival guide · 2027

Ram Navami (राम नवमी) celebrates the birth of Lord Rama — the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the ideal king of the Hindu epic Ramayana. It falls on the 9th day (Navami) of the bright fortnight of Chaitra (March–April).

Lord Rama is revered as the embodiment of virtue, righteousness (dharma), and ideal kingship. The Ramayana is one of the most influential texts in Asian civilisation, inspiring literature, dance, and devotion across South and Southeast Asia for millennia.

Traditions & Observance

Recitation of the Ramayana

The continuous recitation of the Ramacharitmanas — Tulsidas's Hindi retelling of the Ramayana — is central to Ram Navami. Nine-day Akhand Path programmes beginning on the first day of Chaitra Navratri conclude on Ram Navami with the birth episode. Devotional bhajans praising Lord Rama are sung in temples and homes throughout the day.

Fasting and Prayer

Many devotees fast on Ram Navami, consuming only fruit and milk. Temples perform special abhishek (ritual bathing) of Rama's image and offer new clothes, flowers, and sweets. The precise moment of Rama's birth — believed to be at noon — is marked with the ringing of bells and blowing of conch shells.

Processions and Rath Yatras

In cities and towns across North India, decorated chariots carrying images of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman are taken in procession through the streets. Participants wear saffron, carry flags, and chant 'Jai Shri Ram.' Ayodhya — Lord Rama's birthplace — sees some of the largest celebrations in the world.

Panchamrit Abhishek at Ayodhya

At the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya, a special abhishek with five nectars (Panchamrit) is performed on the image of Ram Lalla. Lakhs of pilgrims converge on Ayodhya, making it one of the largest pilgrimage gatherings of the Hindu year.
